Congratulations to @fanarhaddad @meriponline for the first of several MERIP articles relevant to today's #Iraq, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of US inflicted democracy. twitter.com/fanarhaddad/st…
My piece for @meriponline on Iraqi protest since 2019. The ubiquity of protest, the fixation on 2019 (with memorialization overshadowing political action) and, crucially, the elites appropriation of protest repertoires has worked to the system's advantage. https://t.co/e1lmHELHOS

Just incredible. NY Times asks, “Why did the U.S. invade Iraq?” without mentioning the completely false article it published on its front page in the run-up to the war suggesting Iraq had WMDs. And its other brazen pro-war coverage more broadly. nytimes.com/2023/03/18/wor… Retweeted by Nabil Al-Tikriti

20 years ago, the US + UK invaded Iraq. Within a few months, the impact could be seen everywhere. Here, a neighbourhood generator, with cables extending haphazardly in every direction to make up for a failing state electric grid, which to this day has not yet fully recovered. I’ve been following the work of #Iraqi artists for quite a long time. Their work has an unparalleled elegance and a spirit I am in love with 💜💚 So - every Saturday, I’ll grace your timeline with the art of a favourite 🪄✨ This will be an ongoing thread 😊 1️⃣ Wasmaa Al-Agha Retweeted by Nabil Al-Tikriti

Turkey’s Back to the Future Agenda
Can Erimtan argues that AKP’s goals for a new Turkey basically amount to replacing the Kemalist Republic with a retro (and futuristic) “Anatolian federation of Muslim ethnicities,” thus reproducing the pre-1923 reality of Anatolian identity politics.
